My take: Yet another page from my Surfaces diary

Dear Diary,

So, another Surfaces is in the books. What’s this for me? No. 19? Seems like only yesterday I was walking aimlessly around the Sands Convention Center in 1995. All I remember saying to myself was, “I traded in my career in horse racing for this?” In retrospect, it was the best decision I ever made.

Surfaces. How is it possible, dear diary, for something to be so exhilarating and exhausting at the same time? Such a juxtaposition. Yet every year it seems to be over in a flash. How busy were we? Four days in Vegas and not one wager on a horse race, not one bet placed on a single game. Thirty minutes of three-card poker and a few rolls of the dice were it. Ceramic: Producers continue to master digital imagery

Crossville’s Lindsey Ann Waldrep and HGTV’s John Gidding pose in front of the company’s new display system.

Different looks, shapes, sizes also take center stage

By Louis Iannaco

Volume 26/Number 19; February 4/11, 2013

Once again, advancements in manufacturing techniques seized the day at Surfaces as ceramic and porcelain tile producers were all about the techno-pop. With state-of-the-art technology, tile manufacturers have been able to make any surface look exactly like a different material. Whether it’s slate, travertine or marble, things don’t always have to be what they appear when it comes to ceramic and porcelain tile.

Utilizing techniques such as digital imagery/ink jet printing, tile producers created numerous looks for the perusal of Surfaces attendees. From rectangular planks to even larger formats than in previous years, ceramic players offered their customers something new, better or different. Quick-Step’s quirky vignettes led to a Best of Surfaces award in the large booth category .

Segment gets longer, stronger

By Melissa McGuire

Volume 26/Number 19; February 4/11, 2013

Las Vegas—Laminate may not have been the largest flooring category at Surfaces, but one thing was certain: The product still has a significant foothold in the marketplace. An overall consensus among retailers confirmed that while luxury vinyl tile is encroaching on laminate’s market share, the category not only has staying power, but growing power as well.

“Our business has grown 25%-30% this year alone,” said Doron Gal, CEO of Eternity Flooring. Headquartered in Pacoima, Calif., the company had positive feedback from the show and was very happy with the attendance. “We’ve seen more activity at this show than in years past. Even with the economy still down a bit, we’re seeing people buying.” Continue reading Laminate: Neither down nor out
