Mannington in lockstep with design trends

Product development process feeds off cues in fashion, home decor

February 5/12, 2018: Volume 33, Issue 17

By Reginald Tucker

Salem, N.J.—At Mannington no product is brought to market without the requisite research, forethought and consideration of retailer needs and consumer trends and designs. FCNews got a glimpse of that extensive creative design and development process at work at the company’s in-house design showroom at its facilities here during a special Surfaces product preview event.

Presented here are some of the highlights across several product categories.

Adura Apex
Rooms that are prone to spills and wet messes can still have the look of wood (plus the exceptional performance of a luxury vinyl tile) with Mannington’s new Adura Max Apex. “Our Adura Max Apex floors deliver the look of real wood with formats that include wide widths and long lengths as well as variable widths and lengths,” said Joe Amato, vice president of residential styling. “This mix of renewed classic and on-trend designs capture the essence of real wood in ways we once could only imagine.”

Apex Adura debuts in six new colors: Aspen, a rich, refined European Oak design; Chart House, which conveys a shiplap design; Hilltop, a traditional reclaimed hickory look; Hudson, an urban chic visual; Napa, a character oak design with a classic European ceruse finish; and Spalted Wych Elm, a versatile design in 8 x 72-inch planks that easily transitions from traditional to contemporary settings.

Luxury vinyl sheet (LVS)
What’s old is new again, so the expression goes. Mannington’s Revive LVS collection gets three new looks that feature updated spins on classic and vintage looks, including floors with highly decorative surfaces.

“Mannington floors are designed to be lived on,” said Terry Marchetta, director, residential styling. “Our new sheet vinyl collection reflects that philosophy by marrying style with easy maintenance in our interpretations of on-trend looks in home design.”

Designs include: Oceana, a modern spin on classic Carrara marble; revive tapestry, a fresh take on classic decorative tile; Versailles, inspired by the well-traveled pathways of the iconic French palace for which it is named; Millcreek, inspired by reclaimed timber found in an old grain mill; and Patina, which delivers the authentic look of naturally aged concrete in easy-care LVS style.

Laminate
Mannington’s confidence in the mature but still relevant laminate category is reflected by its commitment to bringing retailers products that provide trade-up opportunities. The company aims to do just that with the latest additions to its Restoration Collection.

Highlights include: Hillside Hickory; already one of Mannington’s best-selling hickory plank designs, this line spins contemporary, creating a floor that works well in modern farmhouse and neutral Scandinavian settings, according to Cristen Del Bove, senior stylist. Then there’s Palace Plank, which combines the timeless beauty of wide plank European white oak with state-of-the art technology for a floor infused with authentic color, texture. Lastly, Palace Chevron is a look that dates back to 17th century France.

Hardwood
Mannington’s already extensive hardwood lineup gets a quintet new designs this spring. Additions include Carriage Oak, which captures the essence of worn painted wood from vintage carriage houses but in an updated, contemporary color palette; Foundry Hickory, which features subtle wire brushing enhanced by a triple-stained effect; Tribeca Oak, which offers a refined urban look with subtle wire brushing and multiple stain layers; Cider Mill Hickory, which combines the charm and nostalgia found in a vintage cider mill. A unique hand staining technique showcases the natural color variation, ranging from light to dark, on each plank; and Cider Mill Oak, which captures the spirit a of wood found in old mills.

Beyond flooring: Daltile countertop program—A new revenue stream for retailers

October 9/16, 2017: Volume 32, Issue 9

Floor covering retailers are constantly seeking fresh ways to boost their bottom line, whether it’s expanding product offerings or entering new businesses altogether. To that end, with this issue FCNews launches its exclusive partnership with Dal-Tile, a major player in the countertop segment, in producing an ongoing editorial series that demonstrates how retailers can make money via this lucrative category.

Screen Shot 2017-10-17 at 9.47.13 AMA profitable market opportunity. The U.S. countertop industry—which includes anything in traditional countertop or the new, large-slab format—is estimated to be about $5 billion in sales annually, with roughly half of this coming from stone, quartz and the brand new category of porcelain slab. Quartz continues to grow at double-digit rates, and the new kid on the block, porcelain, is quickly becoming a significant part of the slab market and is expected to grow exponentially over the next few years. So, there is obviously money to be made by providing countertop products to retail customers. Also, consumers are already coming into flooring retailers’ showrooms to buy floor and wall tile for renovations, so why send them elsewhere to purchase their countertops? By adding countertops to the total sale, retailers can easily increase their profits.

Daltile: Your trusted partner. The fastest-growing countertop categories (stone, quartz and porcelain) are the product lines that Daltile is already an expert at producing. Daltile, a player in the stone and slab space since opening its first slab yard in 1999, has grown into a leading supplier of countertops over the years, spearheading innovation and evolution in the industry. The brand’s nationwide network includes high-end showroom/warehouse locations that stock and display an incredibly broad range of natural granite, marble and quartzite slabs as well as Dal-Tile’s One Quartz offering. By recently supercharging its existing business in countertops with renewed focus, new investments and innovations, Daltile is giving retailers the opportunity to win an even larger portion of the lucrative countertop market.

Screen Shot 2017-10-17 at 9.47.24 AMBy providing superior countertop solutions under the trusted Daltile brand name, the company is making it easier for retailers to execute a “complete sale,” comprising both tile flooring and countertop products.

Sales support, training. Success entails more than providing retailers with trendy products. Daltile’s newly enhanced countertop offering also comes with a comprehensive support package. “This includes training and certification programs for fabricators as well as effective merchandising vehicles for all customer segments,” said Paij Thorn-Brooks, vice president of marketing. “Extensive literature has also been created to effectively educate the retail sales associate, guide the consumer through the selection process, accurately convey the levels of style and design inherent in all of our large-format slabs and train the installer. We have put everything in place to help our retailers successfully add countertops to their existing businesses, and we also have the infrastructure to support them for continued success in this lucrative and fast-growing arena.”

Screen Shot 2017-10-17 at 9.47.32 AMAs Daltile further invests in the countertop industry, the brand will continue to be the customer’s leading resource for her product needs. Regardless of the vision or application, Daltile offers customers across the nation the products and resources they need to bring their designs to life.

Leadership in innovation. “Daltile’s new countertop focus is being driven by product and technical innovations,” said Matt Kahny, executive vice president. “We have launched porcelain slabs that deliver the incredible beauty of natural stone along with the durability and performance of porcelain. We have introduced proprietary, high-style granites and quartzites as well as new One Quartz products that cover a diverse array of designs. Innovation in style, design, technology and performance in everything we do.”

Thorn-Brooks credits Daltile with revolutionizing porcelain slabs. “We took countertops to the next level through investment and innovation, and style and design leadership in the porcelain slab arena. Daltile’s new Panoramic Porcelain Surfaces offer the ultimate in design and style flexibility.”

Screen Shot 2017-10-17 at 9.47.42 AMInvestments pay dividends. Daltile is investing significantly to develop and implement the tools and technologies needed to offer the products with which retailers can make more money in the countertop segment. “Our greatest investment is the new plant we are building in Tennessee to increase participation in quartz countertops,” Kahny explained. “This facility will be operational in 2018. Our investments also span several additional areas of our business, including establishing new Daltile Stone Centers to expand our network and get closer to our customers. We currently have centers across the country and will continue expanding in 2018.”

Wood: Latest Mirage offerings put focus on color, design

May 22/29, 2017: Volume 31, Issue 25

Screen Shot 2017-05-30 at 10.47.17 AMSaint-Georges, Quebec, Canada—Mirage has expanded its offering across four signature collections to meet growing consumer demand for trendy colors, patterns and designs.

The Sweet Memories collection, which hearkens back to the charm and authenticity of old-fashioned floors created via Mirage’s exclusive brushing and staining processes, gets two new colors: Gelato and Peppermint. Gelato is a beige-gray hue that imparts a distinctive, luxurious look ideal for minimalist modern décors, while Peppermint is a pure ash gray shade with hints of mineral streaks.

“It’s a fashionable addition that’s sure to be embraced for its timeless, classic style,” said Brad Williams, vice president of sales and marketing for Boa Franc, maker of the Mirage brand.

Both colors, which are available in maple, feature Mirage’s Classic technology in 3¼- and 4¼-inch widths, or engineered in 5-, 61⁄2- and 73⁄4-inch widths and in locking technology in 45⁄16 inches. Gelato and Peppermint are also available in yellow birch grade in a 4¼-inch width and Cashmere finish.

Next up, the popular Flair collection gets Nightfall, which conveys a rich yet classic look. The new color features velvety brown tones with golden highlights, giving homeowners flexibility in their design options. Like other colors in the Flair collection, Nightall features the natural look of oiled flooring without the maintenance hassles, achieved using Mirage Floors’ ultra-matte, highly resistant DuraMatt finish. Available in maple and red oak character grades, Nightfall comes in widths ranging from 4¼ inches (classic) all the way up to 5-, 61⁄2- and 7¾-inch widths (engineered).

Screen Shot 2017-05-30 at 10.47.23 AMMirage’s Admiration collection gets Cape Cod, a creamy beige Scandinavian-inspired tone that evokes seaside or coastal living. Cape Cod is available in maple and red oak species in 3¼- and 4¼-inch widths; in engineered formats ranging from 35⁄16, 5 and 6½ inches; and in a 45⁄16-inch locking format. It is also available in a yellow birch species in a 4¼-inch width and in a 35⁄16-inch engineered version. All formats feature Mirage’s semi-gloss, Cashmere finish.

Lastly, the Imagine collection gets Driftwood, a new color the company describes as a refined, highly nuanced gray shade that will add structure and character to any décor. “With its cork look and textured surface, this new color is perfect for modern, streamlined interiors,” Williams said.

The Imagine collection, which is designed for active families and pet owners, features a textured surface to help hide scuffing and scratch marks.

Driftwood is available in several species, including maple and red oak, and comes in a variety of widths ranging from 3¼ to 7¾ inches.

In addition to the new colors, Mirage is making select products in planks as long as 82 inches. According to Williams, the new lengths make any room in the house look bigger. Plus, because fewer boards are needed to cover a given area, fewer joints are visible, thereby resulting in a more seamless installation.
