Resurgence of carpet and resilient; the new normal dictates value, function, innovation

As the saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining and this rings true in floor covering. A decidedly negative economic state found a ray of light in the resurgent sales of resilient flooring and carpet. On the decline for much of the early 21st century, these two categories have been consistently gaining market share throughout the financial downturn and beckoned sales in a climate where other categories suffered mightily.

“Resilient is on the rebound,” said David Sheehan, vice president of resilient business at Mannington Mills, “due in large part to the movement of the consumer toward products that are practical and pragmatic in today’s economy.” Continue reading Resurgence of carpet and resilient; the new normal dictates value, function, innovation

Laminate state of the industry: Units pick up but sales struggle in face of increasing competition, economy

HICKSVILLE, N.Y.—There may be signs of life in the economy, at least on the residential side, but the overall pace remains slow. Add to that a drastic drop in wood prices—especially from imports—the continued surge in popularity of luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and an overcapacity problem, and the laminate category continues to struggle to regain the momentum it had just before the financial and housing crises hit.

Research conducted by Floor Covering News to see how the category has fared over the first four months of 2010 compared to the same period last year has rendered mix results. On one hand, product is starting to move through the channel as more consumers break from their shells and once again begin to shop for home improvement items. On the other hand, dollar volumes and profits remain sluggish as the post-recession consumer searches for products that will give her the most performance at the lowest price. National Wood Flooring Association: Initiatives range from environmental to A&D

NATIONAL HARBOR, MD.—Things are looking up for the hardwood flooring industry. So said Ed Korczak, CEO and executive director, National Wood Flooring Association Ed Korzcak of NWFA(NWFA), at the group’s annual convention here two weeks ago.

After a year in which the industry was down about 23% in dollars, Korczak said the association is seeing a 6% to 7% uptick in the first quarter of 2010 over the same year-ago period. “We attribute that to two things,” he said. “First, the consumer has a little more confidence due in part to unemployment remaining flat. Second is the result of pent-up demand.” Continue reading National Wood Flooring Association: Initiatives range from environmental to A&D
