My take: Random ramblings from NeoCon

July 3/10: Volume 32, Issue 2

By Steven Feldman

Screen Shot 2016-07-15 at 3.46.11 PMHow can 2017 have less than half of it remaining? Time really does fly. Walking around NeoCon last month made me realize just that. There was no way we could be five months removed from Surfaces. Then again, show management is probably saying there is no way it’s been five years since they changed the name to TISE, or The International Surface Event, and I still refer to it as Surfaces. (That’s because most of you do, too.)

Anyway, as the ADD kicks into high gear as the years go by and my brain goes in 100 different directions, here was what I was thinking about on the plane ride home from NeoCon:

If only I booked the 1:30 or 4:30 and not the 2:30, we wouldn’t have been stranded an extra day in Chicago… Kudos to Metroflor for going the extra mile in creating awareness for its Aspecta brand with a public area on the first floor of the Merchandise Mart where attendees could stop in and get a smoothie. This in addition to a well-attended party at the Godfrey… Encryption, the subway tile-looking carpet tile planks from Milliken, is an innovative design… Does anyone know how to fold a fitted sheet?… Great to see old friend and former Bentley boss Anthony Minite heading up the U.S. operations for Denmark-based Fletco. There’s a good story there…

Impressed with the huge Tarkett/Tandus Centiva/Johnsonite/ Desso space on the third floor. Bringing everything together makes all the sense in the world…Speaking of the third floor, there may be more attendees per square foot in the Mohawk space than anywhere else… And speaking of Mohawk, Gavin DeGraw headlined its annual NeoCon soiree. Great performance, but would have preferred Earth Wind & Fire… I think Aquafil is one of the best-kept secrets in this industry. What they do with fiber from a color and sustainability standpoint is unmatched…

Always love the Bentley showroom design on the 10th floor… Speaking of high floors, no more elevator waits for me. Take a non-NeoCon elevator to a non-NeoCon floor, like 12 or 13, and walk down. I should have thought of that 20 years ago… They may not be a household name, but Taj Flooring has some innovative designs. With the right exposure they could make some noise in the next few years… I miss not seeing Don Miller at the Roppe booth. Hopefully next year… I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars teams up to prevent an idiot from cutting in at the front…

The Raskin purchase of To Market is sure to pay dividends… I like what companies like Gerflor and American Biltrite are doing in the U.S…. Gibson’s vs. Mastro’s vs. Gene & Georgetti. Who wins?… I am expecting Atlas to be more visible going forward with rumors of some new branding on the horizon… While carbon neutral is the buzzword for many, Interface is moving forward with the first carbon negative carpet tile a few years down the road… Noticed more companies with Declare labels than years past…

At the end of the day, though, one of my favorite aspects of NeoCon is seeing executives of competing manufacturers visiting each other’s showrooms and spaces. There is a certain camaraderie unseen at other events. It’s more than just checking out the competition. There is a palpable level of respect and friendship. I like that.

Gerflor united three brands in one place

Screen Shot 2017-05-01 at 2.13.02 PMChicago—Gerflor USA, Sport Court and Connor Sports came together recently at its first-ever combined sales meeting since joining forces under the Gerflor umbrella in 2014. The meeting was held with the goal of energizing and empowering the company’s all-star sales force to share best practices, cementing their commitment to customer service and success.

“With our recent transition to operating together, face-to-face engagement is invaluable,” said Benjamin Bachman, Gerflor USA’s chief sales and marketing officer. “This meeting gave us an opportunity to strengthen our connections, learn from one another and enhance our collaboration, coordination and communication. And those are wins that not only benefit our organization, but also our customers.”

At the core of all three brands is a history of innovation. Connor Sports, Official Court Supplier of the NCAA Final Four, and Sport Court, the original modular sport tile, complement the segment-specific solutions of Gerflor’s product offering, including Mipolam, the original homogenous sheet flooring, and Taraflex, the original resilient sports flooring. Together, they further strengthen Gerflor’s overall reach and recognition within the U.S. market.

Though each brand serves different markets, they share the same mission: to better assist customers. To do so, Gerflor is streamlining processes across the brands in multiple areas, including finance, operations, human resources, information technology and marketing.

“Our goal is to create a strong core and empower our employees through a culture of sharing best practices,” added Bachman. “Working together more strategically, our three brands offer every customer a wider range of products to fit all needs.”

The meeting was only the beginning of Gerflor’s approach of bringing all brands together. Gerflor USA is in the process of identifying career opportunities to further support its market growth.

Gerflor celebrates legacy, future of original design

image006Chicago—This year, Gerflor USA marks two noteworthy milestones on its already impressive innovation timeline: the 80th anniversary of Mipolam, the original homogeneous sheet flooring, and the 70th anniversary of Taraflex, the original resilient sports flooring. Both are industry firsts in their respective product categories and are as valued by designers and specifiers today as they were when introduced to the market decades ago.

“Mipolam and Taraflex are just two of Gerflor’s industry firsts, and I’m confident they won’t be our last,” said Catherine del Vecchio, Gerflor USA’s senior director of marketing. “Our record of innovation demonstrates our ability to not only satisfy market needs, but to deliver products that consistently and continuously perform in new and improved ways. The quality of products like Mipolam and Taraflex have been tested for decades; they’ve evolved with the industry for 80 years and are the reference of specifications in their respective category.”

Since 1937, Mipolam has grown from a single product line to 15 different lines with more than 300 colors available worldwide. Gerflor will introduce its latest line later this year: Mipolam Classic, which will be available in tiles and sheet. The new line is a nod to the original pattern, which is an organic linear directional design, similar to a cirrus cloud.

Taraflex, first created in 1947, is the world’s most widely specified sports surface, and the same flooring selected for 10 consecutive Olympic Games through Gerflor’s partnerships with IHF and FIVB. Because of its safety and performance benefits, Taraflex is a leader in indoor sports flooring for U.S. schools, installed in more than 70,000 gymnasiums worldwide.

To celebrate its “original” achievements—including more than a dozen products and surface treatments—Gerflor USA is launching a contest to give away other coveted product icons from the interior design and fashion industries, such as a Hermes scarf, Louboutin shoes and an Anglepoise lamp. For each month (April through September) that a participant enters, he or she is automatically in the running to win the grand prize: a trip to Maison & Objet Paris with Gerflor in 2018. For more information and to enter, visit Gerflor USA.
