Some rules are meant to be broken
by Matthew Spieler
Rules are put in place for a reason but, there are times when they need to be broken due to exceptional circumstances. For instance, a professional athlete must meet a set of criteria to be eligible for a particular sports hall of fame, such as being in the profession for a certain minimum amount of time.
But, there have been cases in which a person’s career was cut short due to injury or death and was still voted into his profession’s hall of fame. The thinking was the player was so dominant, so far and above everyone else during his shortened career, he would have easily been voted in if he was able to play out his career. The best-known examples of this are in baseball with Sandy Koufax and Ralph Kiner, two players who would have rewritten the record books if their bodies didn’t give out before their prime. BIG SHOES: The unexpected passing of Chris Davis did more than send shockwaves throughout all segments of the industry, it left a mighty large hole as his influence went far beyond that of the World Floor Covering Association (WFCA). Davis was personally involved in a multitude of flooring associations, organizations and committees—in many cases he was the chairman or head of a particular group. Davis was unique in his abilities and deft at being able to juggle so many different hats. How all these posts will be filled is still anyone’s guess. Will one person be able to step in and take command as Davis was able to or will the responsibilities be divided among different people? Either way, the shoes Davis left behind are large by anyone’s standards. Continue reading Al's column

Dear friends and colleagues,
The recent, unexpected passing of Chris Davis has left us not only in shock but also with so much sorrow. As an integral part of the floor covering industry for 18 years as the president and CEO of the World Covering Association, Chris was the biggest advocate for the advancement of floor covering retailers through education and their protection through legislative efforts. He also took Surfaces to the next level, eventually selling the show for $40 million and endowing the WFCA’s future. He was the consummate professional.
Because of his larger–than-life personality and love of the industry and people, many regarded Chris as more than the president of WFCA. They considered him a friend.
As the entire industry mourns his loss, Floor Covering News is providing a forum on Facebook, the Chris Davis Memorial Page, where friends and colleagues can offer their thoughts, recollections, photos, condolences, etc. We encourage everyone to remember Chris in their own personal way on this page by visiting facebook.com/ChrisDavisMemorial.
