Dalton—Lamar Hennon, founder of Carpets of Dalton, which serves Cartersville, Ga., Calhoun, Ga., and Chattanooga in addition to Dalton, died Aug. 25 in his home in Georgia after battling cancer. He was 78.
Hennon was considered a pioneer in retail flooring by many in the industry. In 1962, he entered the carpet industry as a partner in several startup businesses. He opened Carpets of Dalton in 1971, growing it to become what was once the largest carpet outlet in the country. His son, Jerry Hennon, now runs the business.
Lamar Hennon gave generously to the community, especially in support of athletic programs, schools and charities. He also supported both his alma maters in a variety of ways; most notable was his involvement with the football and baseball programs at Dalton High School and his service at Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) as a member of the Board of Trustees. He helped fund a renovation of the LMU baseball stadium, which now bears his name.
Hennon is survived by his wife, Sue; children and their spouses, Jerry and Lisa Hennon, Susan and Ken Brown, and Rodney and Kim Hennon; grandchildren, Blake Hennon, Rachel Hennon, Hillary Brock, Katelynn Brock, Sydney Brock, Jerry Bruce Hennon, Jason Lamar Hennon, Jaimie Brown, Stryker Brown, Jenna Williams, Walker Hennon, Keeli Hennon and Carter Hennon, and numerous nieces and nephews.
