Raleigh, N.C.—Despite more than three years of negative sales in the laminate category, brand leader Pergo has not let up on the innovation button. Last year the company introduced the patented PerfectFold locking technology and, as it prepares for next year’s introductions, a new printing innovation has been announced.
Developed by Pergo’s global R&D group, Natural Variations will appear on select decors in the company’s premium design collections in the U.S. and Europe starting in the first quarter of 2011, noted David Hartman, vice president of sales and marketing.
A typical laminate décor offering has approximately 10 different plank varieties, he said. “Natural Variations utilizes a patented printing process that allows our designers to build in a wider range of real wood details and character into the décors. These details are applied throughout the décor paper resulting in hundreds of unique planks.”
Just as no two hardwood floors look the same, “Natural Variations allows consumers to achieve this distinctive look with more durable, longer-lasting laminate,” Hartman explained. “It doesn’t just create more color and design variations, it provides the most realistic hardwood designs in the laminate category.” When appropriate, Pergo will combine the technology with embossed in-register texturing.
Unlike PerfectFold, which is not only used by Pergo but licensed to other manufacturers in the U.S. and Europe, Hartman said the company currently has no intentions of doing the same with Natural Variations.
